Jackson responds to Thurman's charge that he is an unregenerate States Rights man who still defends the doctrine of secession. Thurman calls Jackson "an old crank," an "idiot," and a "drunk." Jackson says he's a man of the New South and denies he's a drunk. "I rejoice in the belief the African slavery, the only cause of serious disturbance, removed forever, such a union has been restored to the great sisterhood of States."
