First Edition. Hardcover. Quarto. Hardcover. [2] Title page, 29 pages, [1] page blank, [1]. Illustrated with 2 plates plus additional illustrations provided by the author. Several extra sheets of paper are bound in between the pages. Original wraps were nicely bound in a custom half leather binding. Reddish marbled paper covered boards. Red leather corners and spine. Thin black leather title label on the spine. Reddish marbled end sheets. Top edge gilt. Very light rubs to the leather extremities. The front hinge is cracked. Interior contents are clean.
This copy has the armorial bookplate of the author on the front paste down and his signature on the front blank end paper. The blank sheet after page 6 has an illustration (pasted upside down) of the Etowah River. Plate I bound before page 7 is another diagram of the Etowah River. The next added sheet after page 8 is three fourths complete with additional hand written information. The manuscript writing in the hand of the author provides additional details pertaining to excavations. Second folding plate precedes page 13. Another blank sheet after page 18 has a cut out diagram of "Indian Mounds Early County" on the verso. The last extra bound sheet has 3 pasted down news clippings that mention the American Antiquarian Society and Charles C. Jones, Jr. Scarce. 14 copies in OCLC with only 3 copies having the printed title page from Charles Hamilton. C.C. Jones also wrote about "Ancient Tumuli" in his book Antiquities of the Southern Indians published in 1873.
