USS Potomac sailed w/ships Cumberland, Missippy [sic], Princeton, Falmouth, Truxton, Somers, Reefer[?] Bonito, and Petrel, to mouth of river Alvarado off of Veracruz.  Describes bombardment: “…the Commodore made rig to get spring [word] the cable to bring the broadsides to bear on the fort at 6 PM the firing Commenced, and Continued about 2 hours we didi not land, the next day we got under weigh and came back to our anchorage[.] we are waiting for orders from Washington to Attack the Castle of St. Juan Ola [Fort San Juan de Ulúa, offshore opposite Veracruz].
