Second Edition. Hardcover. Thick octavo. Brown cloth hardcover. [3], xv (Preface and Memoir of the Author), iii-viii (Introduction), 1094 pages. Illustrated with steel engraved portraits, one color page map, and a folding map in back. Binding is in poor condition. Most of the detached spine laid inside the front cover. Covers are loose but attached and are edge worn and chipped. Text block is broken into two parts with a third section starting to break. Light toning to the text. Top text edge darkened. Folding map in back has a small tear not affecting the content. Scattered light foxing to the blank side of the map. Light toning to the map.
Brief notes written on the front paste down. Armorial bookplate of J. J. Howard on the front paste down. Armorial bookplate of Alfred Trego Butler on the right front flyleaf. Printed label beneath Butler's bookplate reads: "This Book Was Bought From Alfred Trego Butler Windsor Herald by Anthony Richard Wagner, Richmond Herald, 14 September 1946." A previous owner 1999 inscription written in the upper corner of the right front flyleaf. Armorial bookplate of Arthur Crisp on the rear paste down. A more rent bookseller ticket from "Heraldry Today" in Wiltshire located bottom right corner rear paste down.
Three page folded letter dated December 23, 1844 laid inside the front cover. The letter was written by the author to a Mr. Peter Coolidge from Framingham Massachusetts and the contents regard early settlers of the Watertown area. The letter was written from Philadelphia and includes a post mark. A small v chip to the paper where it was unfolded. Poor. Item #33051
