First Edition. Hardcover. Small octavo. [1], xvi, 280 pages, [1]. Illustrated by L. T. Dickinson of Chattanooga. Includes portrait photographs. Red cloth hardcover with gilt title and color illustration of a soldier and Union flag on the front cover. Faded gilt title on the spine. Slight lean to the hardcover. Red cloth binding is lightly damp stained and faded - more so on the back cover. The rear paste down has red stains along the board edges. End sheets have a couple of small holes. Two small stains on the rear paste down. Binding cords are occasionally visible in the gutters. No loose pages. Last few illustrations are a bit warped on the blank sides. Most of the contents are clean. Previous owner of this copy was a Civil War veteran of the Army of Northern Virginia. His inscription written on the front paste down reads - "S. W. Jones, 11th Corporal, Company D. 18 Miss. Infantry, Barksdale's Brigade, McLaws' Division, Longstreet's Corps, Army Northern Virginia."
