Hardcover. Octavo. xvi, 17-644 pages, [2]. DEFECTIVE (or an obscure binding from the publisher?). Black cloth hardcover with gilt stamped title on the spine. This copy lacks all the illustrations and were never bound in. No evidence of any illustrations being removed. Title, copyright page, and preface all dated 1887. This copy is not the 1981 Morningside facsimile. The text block is uniform, mostly clean and sturdy with no cracked hinges or loose pages. Light soil to pages 130-139. Front hinge browned. Faint, light damp stains to the text edges. Rear end sheet toned. Volume 2 starts on page 503. Otherwise, a good or better copy.
