First Edition. Hardcover. Octavos. 2 volumes. Volume I: viii, pages 9-384 pages. Volume 2: viii, 382 pages. Red cloth hardcovers with bright gilt illustrations, black illustrations, designs, and titles on the front boards. Illustrated with frontispiece engravings both volumes, engraved title pages, one engraved portrait volume 1, and some illustrations in volume 2. This is an ex-library set and has been repaired to fair condition. Remaining parts of the spines laid back onto red mulberry paper. Original covers were detached and reattached with tissue layers in the hinges. The covers are a bit stiff to open. The rear end sheet in volume 2 has been removed. The title page in volume 1 is torn in the gutter. Library labels on the front paste downs are blacked out. Simpson College Library stamp on both right front flyleaves. Library numerals stamped on a few pages. Iowa State Library blind embossed stamp on the title pages. Withdrawn stamps located in both volumes. The text is brittle with some edge chips to the text. Several page edge tears already repaired with tissue. The text blocks are slightly uneven. On the plus side the contents are clean, the bindings are now sturdy and the covers are in very good shape.
