Second Edition. Hardcover. Octavo.[2], xii, 13-407 pages. Brown cloth hardcover with gilt stamped flag and cannon illustration on the front cover. Gilt stamped title on spine. Illustrated with frontispiece steel engravings of Doniphan and Price. Folding map titled "A New Map of Mexico, California & Oregon" is present with a small chip upper left edge. Illustrated with engravings and plans including Santa Fe and environs and the battle plan of Sacramento. Light damp stains and scattered foxing to the text and portraits. Some edge wear and faded spots to the brown cloth. Cloth chipped head of the spine. Period ink name of A. Frazer written on the title page and on right front flyleaf. Later inscription - "R. A. Ruff 1936" written on the front paste down. Below the later inscription is another one - "Margaret Moore Ruff Schaffer August 1971." Second edition is considered the best edition according to Howes. A fair or better copy.
