First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. 165 pages, [1]. Red cloth hardcover with gilt illustrated title on the front cover. Cloth binding has a small rubbed spot on the spine. Light soil to the covers with light rubs to the cloth extremities. Right front flyleaf has a small tear on the edge. Toning to the end papers. Inscription on the right front flyleaf reads - "To Mrs Joseph E. Brown with the sincere regard of the author. - March 3d 1886." On the blank page preceding the title page is a torn half sheet of paper with a color armorial design at the top. Written under the design - "Col & Mrs Henry D Capers at home 234 Peachtree St Atlanta". A few newspaper clippings are pasted down inside (not covering any printed text). On the front paste is a clipped poem from the Woman's Tribune June 1886 by Father Ryan. Other poems are pasted down on the copyright page and page 76. A loose single blank 1880's Western Telegraph Company form is laid inside the front cover. The author Henry Dickson Capers, 1835-1908, was born in South Carolina. He was an officer in the Confederate Army and served as an officer in the 12th Georgia artillery. After the war he was a practicing attorney in Atlanta.
