Hardcover. Quarto. [3], vii, 714 pages. Illustrated with several maps. Publishers gilt and black illustrated brown cloth covers. Title on front cover and gilt title on spine. Binding is slanted. Cloth frayed head of spine and worn on the lower corners. Approx. 1.5" split to the cloth on the rear joint. A few light stains to the top text edge. The right front flyleaf and front blank end sheet are starting to pull loose from the text. Hinges are intact. Nice inscription written on right front flyleaf by the author - "Commenced this Volume at Tarrytown N.Y. 1846 in conference with Washington Irving and Completed same July 4th, 1876 - With authors regards Henry B. Carrington, Col U.S.A. Late Brig General" This edition has "Fourth Thousand" printed on the title page. From wikipedia: Henry Beebee Carrington (March 2, 1824 – October 26, 1912) was a lawyer, professor, prolific author, and an officer in the United States Army during the American Civil War and in the Old West during Red Cloud's War.
