An extract from the Foreword:
"The six sisters and four brothers, children of Adam Leopold Alexander and his wife, Sarah Hillhouse Gilbert, constituted such a typical family group, strongly bound together by ties of affection, and accustomed from early childhood to a very free and constant interchange of letters, in which have been recorded their history, their accomplishments, and their emotions; this correspondence includes charming word pictures of Southern plantation life and of the environment of the writers in the quarter century before the Civil War. It had become a family custom to pass these interesting letters around from one member to another, and many of them were preserved, some because of their literary charm, others because of the recollections contained therein, or on account of some special historical value."
