First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. [1], [4] color plates, 448 pages, [1]. A few text illustrations. Brown cloth hardcover with blind stamped covers. Title on spine. Edge wear to boards and corners. Light to moderate scattered foxing and toning to the pages. Inscribed to "Jno J. Jones by Hon. Robt Toombs, Jany 9, 1857" on the right front flyleaf. Prior to the Civil War, Robert Toombs served in the Georgia House of Representatives, United States House of Representatives, and later elected to the United States Senate from the Whig Party. After the election of Lincoln in 1860, Toombs supported the secession of Georgia from the Union. He is considered one of the founding fathers of the Confederacy and formed a close relationship with Alexander Stephens also from Georgia. During the war, Toombs served as a General. After the war, Toombs departed for Europe and returned to Georgia in 1867. He died in 1885. Good. Item #25045
