Later printing. Hardcover. Octavo. xl, 714 pages, vii-xi General index. Illustrated with engraved portraits. Green cloth covered boards with leather corners and spine. Raised bands and gilt title on the spine. All edges gilt. Leather is rubbed on the board edges, head and base of the spine and on the spine bands. Preliminary pages vii, viii are loose from the binding and are chipped on the edges. A few other preliminary pages are starting to detach. Light occasional toning and foxing to contents. Engraved portraits have light foxing. A large Ex-Libris bookplate of P. Allen Dutten Parsons located on the front paste down. Gift inscription written on the front blank end sheet - "Charles Lanman from Mrs. Harriet P. Williams." This copy includes a preface to the 1874 edition and a memoir of the author who passed in 1869.
