Later printing. Hardcover. Small thick quarto. , 1258 pages,  pages publisher advertisements, . Frontispiece engraving of R. E. Lee and engraved portraits. Restored. The binding was in poor condition. The original text block with all the end papers and illustrations are original. The text edges were cleaned with abrasive erasure leaving the text block edges much cleaner and smooth. Light, common occasional foxing and toning to the pages and engravings. The original detached boards, with much of the cloth worn or eaten away by insects, is now covered with black mulberry paper. The original blind imprinted lines and decorations are somewhat visible after the covering. Front and rear hinges repaired with light tissue. The spine, completely missing, was replaced with flexible, sturdy black mulberry paper. Red head bands added for style top and bottom of the text. The yellow end sheets are original and contain an inscription on the right front flyleaf "Thos C Stokes June 30, 1875 No - 10." After restoration this copy is a fair or better reading copy.
