Blue cloth covered boards with gilt title and cross on the front cover and gilt diamond on the back. Leather covered corners, joints, and spine. Title on the spine. Blue end papers. The front and rear hinges have old brown tape repairs. Cloth is worn and faded. Leather is edge worn on the boards and is split and cracked on the spine. Small chip to the top edge of the spine. Contents are shaken in the center with one loose, torn plate. Some light scattered foxing and soiling to the pages. A fair copy. Diary begins "In Winter Quarters, Near Brandy Station, Va., Friday, Jan. 1, 1864" and ends Dec. 31, 1864. The author was 22 and an officer of the Tenth Regiment Vermont Volunteer Infantry at . He was on the front lines during Grant's campaign Rapidan River to Petersburg, Va. and with Sheridan during the Shenandoah Valley campaign in the summer and fall of 1864.
