First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. [1], 295 pages. Illustrated with 14 colored lithographs (including the frontispiece), a folding "thermal curve", and a folding map. Repaired. Original brown cloth covered boards with blind stamped borders. Spine replaced with dark paper and white title label. Crude paper repairs made to the front and rear hinges. This book has several brief margin notes and some underlining in light pencil (possibly a review copy or used for reference). Nice presentation inscription written on the front paste down - "From Major George Boyd Adams Express Co. 59 Broadway NY To his friend Frederick Chamberlain? (last couple letters are covered by the front hinge repair) June 12th, 1865." Fair. Item #16799
