Captain Benecke was sent to Chariton County Missouri to restore law and order and defeat bushwhackers and Confederates in the area. The episode addressed whether Benecke was responsible for the death of bushwhacker John W. Leonard. Leonard was executed by Benecke's soldiers for the revenge of William Carter's death. Carter was a horse farrier in the area who was removed from his home, stripped, hung, and shot over 30 times by bushwhacker Jim Jackson's gang of which Leonard was reportedly a member.
