Separate issued map volume with 2 large folding maps present. This book has one folding map, 34 tinted lithographs, and 23 black and white engravings in the appendix. Illustrations include the frontispiece, folding panoramic views of the Great Salt Lake, Native Americans, and engravings of reptiles, insects, botanicals, fossils, etc. Light shelf wear to the cloth binding. Corners are slightly bumped. Interior contents are in very good condition. Gift inscription written on the right front flyleaf reads "To Miss Bascom from her Mother's friend A. Dodge Sept 18, 1872." The map volume has dark brown cloth covered boards with gilt title on the front cover. blind stamped patriotic decoration on the rear board. Cloth spine is chipped and split in a couple of spots. The first map is titled "Map of Great Salt Lake and Adjacent Country in the Territory of Utah Surveyed in 1849 and 1850...Drawn by Lieut Gunnison and Albert Carrington." The first map measures approx. 44" x 22". A few splits to the paper in the numerous folds with no loss of content. The second map is titled, "Fort Leavenworth on the Missouri River and the Great Salt Lake in the Territory of Utah...Drawn by Lieut. Gunnison and Albert Carrington". Slight coloration to the map. Map measuring approx. 66" x 30" has a few small splits to the paper in the numerous folds with no loss of content. Contemporary ink gift inscription "Sarah E. Edwards from Chas E. Edwards" written on the verso of the first map.
