First Edition. Hardcover. 8vo. [4] (title page, directions to binder, preface), 626 pages; [22] pages index; 20 pages "Baronets created by King Charles II"; [4] pages of illustrated crests in back. Illustrated with 25 plates and several in text illustrations. Later binding with reddish marbled paper covered boards. Red spine with 5 raised bands and gilt lettered title. Red leather corners. Leather is rubbed and edge worn head and base of spine, spine bands, and corners. Toning to contents. Occasional light scattered underlining to text. Old ink name on title page (not legible). Pages 241 and 242 of the May issue were cut out. Folding diagram of the Wilton and Lone Bridges is torn and creased with a small loose piece placed with the folding plan. There is partial loss to the illustration at the lower edge (poor condition). Volume XXIII contains 12 issues with title pages bound in. Contents include World history, Travel, American history, original music, poetry, etc. Illustrations include a folding map, approx. 14.5" x 11.5", of the City of Philadelphia (page 372). The map has a 4" horizontal split on the left edge, a 5" split on an inner fold, a 3" split on the left margin, and a couple of 2" splits lower section. Creases on the map edges. Minimal loss to the map at the splits and tears. Map in fair condition only. Illustrations include a colored Rattlesnake engraving; a view of St. Philip's Church in Charles Town, South Carolina; the Port of Calla and more. Fair. Item #11952
