Leather bound. 8vo. [1], [19] pages "Subscriber names"; blank verso; [16]pp (including title, dedication and preface pages); 456pp.; [12]pp index; xxiv "Appendix No. 1" (Printed by John Dixon, Richmond); 32pp "Appendix No. II"; [1]. Full calf leather binding with faded gilt title on red leather spine label. Front board is loose and split on the front joint. The front cover is attached to the binding by an old tape repair. Rear cover is securely attached to text. Rear joint is taped. Leather boards and spine are worn, cracked, rubbed and chipped. Right front flyleaf missing the lower third section. Toning to contents. Previous owner's (Daniel Middagh) name label located on the front paste down. Daniel Middagh's name written in old ink repeatedly on the the front end sheets. A couple of 1813 inscriptions, written by Middagh, are located on the right front flyleaf and the following front blank end sheet. On the rear end sheet is another inscription in old ink- "December 15, 1823 Court Day Mary Simmons Mecklinburg County, Virginia". Old ink doodles and some arithmetic notes also written on the rear end papers. This book has a 19 page list of subscribers with their home towns preceding the title page. The list includes "Tho: Jefferson, Monticello"; "James Madison jun. Orange 2."; "John Marshall, Richmond City"; "Jos. Jones Monroe, Albermarle" (James Madison's Uncle) and dozens of other prominent people.
