Hardcover. Quarto. iv, 780 pages. Hardcover. Dark leather spine and corners with marbled paper covered boards. 5 raised bands, gilt stamped decorations and title on spine. Reddish marbled end sheets and text edges. Edge wear to the boards. Leather is dry and rubbed head and base of spine and corners. Half of the marbled paper covering the front cover has peeled off. Front and rear end sheets have scattered foxing and damp-stains. Some brown spotting to text. Damp-stains to the title page, preface page, gutter of the pages, and the text foredge. Label removed from the rear paste down. Presentation label on the front paste down - "Presented to the Young Men's Library Association by Mrs. J. R. Lamar From the Library of Justice Lamar January, 1917." Address label of E. Merton Coulter pasted down in the upper left corner of the front paste down. Contents include much Civil War information including the battle of "Bull Run", the Confederate States, Confederate Congress, Lexington Missouri, Abraham Lincoln, Privateering, and much more. Fair. Joseph Rucker Lamar, 1857-1916, was an Associate Justice to the United States Supreme Court up until his death from 1911-1916. His cousin was Lucius Lamar of Georgia also an Associate Justice. Justice Lamar was born in Elbert County, Georgia and practiced law in Augusta, Georgia. He was appointed to the Court by President Taft.

E. Merton Coulter was a professor at the University of Georgia. He was a Georgia historian and author of several books and articles dealing with southern history.
